Class act: Gatorade honors Peyton Manning in new spot
18 years of excellence of #18 on the field in Denver and Indianapolis — and many more off of it. Peyton Manning’s athletic feats are well-documented, but what may be more impressive are the things not many people know about, including how he is, according to Kevin Parta of NFL.com, a “well-known letter writer.” For years, Manning has written sincere notes to teammates, fans, family, friends, coaches, other athletes and even opponents.
Gatorade is celebrating Manning’s career in a spot that will air ahead of the NFL draft that was created by TBWA\Chiat\Day LA. Letter recipients highlighted in the two-minute spot include Manning’s former coach Tony Dungy, his brother Eli, legendary baseball player Derek Jeter, and a raft of teammates including Jeff Saturday, Demaryius Thomas and Brandon Stokley. It also includes ESPN's Chris Mortensen, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in January.
Others outside of sports, including Pam Frenzel, mother of Tyler Frenzel who was treated at the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital and Brandon Washington and PeyBack Foundation Scholarship Recipient, are the beneficiaries of Manning’s goodwill and thoughtfulness — and are part of the spot as well.
Though one Boston columnist felt it laid it on a little thick (New England fans are slightly less bitter than Philadelphia Eagles fans), it is certainly an appropriate and moving tribute to an athlete who appreciated much more than most — and was willing to let others know how important they were to his success.
