Amazon has swiftly backed down on it policy of leaving the Boston black suburb Roxbury out of its Prime free same-day delivery.

The company said yesterday that it would bring that service to the neighborhood soon.

Amazon spokesman Scott Stanzel said the company was "actively working " with its local carrier to bring same-day delivery to Roxbury "in the coming weeks."

Once that happens, that would leave no coverage gaps in Boston for the Prime benefit, which launched last year and now serves more than 1,000 cities and towns.

"We are always looking to expand the benefits our Prime members receive and that’s exactly what we are doing," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh rapped Amazon in an emailed statement for allegedly rebuffing his request to add Roxbury to its same-day delivery coverage.

"We understand that the people who run Amazon don't live here and might not understand our great neighborhoods, but this is an egregious mistake that must be changed," he said.

Joyce Linehan, an aide to Walsh, said on Twitter that Amazon called Walsh after he issued his statement and told him that they would change their policy and add Roxbury to its coverage area.

Walsh later confirmed, "After speaking personally with the executives at Amazon, the company informed me today that they will now be offering same day service to every neighborhood in Boston.

"I thank Amazon for this decision, and look forward to its implementation."

Bloomberg last week highlighted how Amazon same-day delivery covered every Boston neighborhood except for the area that encompasses Roxbury

. The story pointed to Roxbury as the most jarring example of how the service excludes some predominantly black neighborhoods in six major cities it covers.

Here's the full statement from Amazon on same-day delivery coming to Roxbury:

"Amazon Prime members in every residential zip code across the lower 48 states receive unlimited Free Two-Day shipping on a massive selection at incredibly low prices. Last year, we launched Prime Free Same-Day Delivery in 12 metropolitan areas and have since expanded to 27 areas, serving more than 1000 cities and towns - and we are not done. We are always looking to expand the benefits our Prime members receive and that’s exactly what we are doing. We are actively working with our local carrier to enable service to the Roxbury neighborhood in the coming weeks. Once completed, Prime members in every zip code in Boston, including the Roxbury neighborhood, will receive Prime Free Same-Day Delivery, in addition to existing Free Two-Day and One-Day shipping options."
