The celebrities at the heart of ongoing internet gossip and a spate of international headlines have won a temporary victory to keep the story off the front pages in England & Wales after the Supreme Court ruled that their identities must remain secret for a further 24 hours.

This latest twist in the saga reverses a defeat suffered by the famous figure at the Court of Appeal on Monday but the short stay of execution only seems to delay the inevitable torrent of front page splashes if and when the injunction is lifted.

In a statement the Supreme Court explained: “The interim injunction granted by the Court of Appeal will remain in place until the conclusion of the Supreme Court hearing, and at the end of the hearing the Supreme Court will decide whether to continue that injunction."

A final decision will be made by judges at yet another appeal to be held on Thursday but what isn’t in doubt is the eye watering legal costs racked up by the claimant in his battle with the Sun on Sunday to keep the story secret.

Should he lose he will be liable to pay both sides' legal costs, thought to be in the order of £1m.
