Hello! Magazine has apologised for publishing an interview with actor George Clooney that he has since claimed never happened.

The magazine said it acquired the article from entertainment agency Famous, which it has worked with in the past. It focused on his relationship with wife Amal Clooney, covering how the two make a long-distance marriage work. However, Oscar winner Clooney said the interview never took place.

In a statement it read: "The problem is that I have not given an interview to Hello Magazine and the quotes attributed to me are not accurate. In my experience, being misquoted is not unusual but to have an 'exclusive interview' completely fabricated is something new. And a very disturbing trend."

Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, The Sun and The Evening Standard all covered the piece too.

Hello! said: "The Hello! Group can only express its deepest respect for both Mr Clooney and his wife, Amal, and its sincere commitment to respectable and accurate journalism.”

It’s not the first time Clooney has had a run in with the entertainment press; in 2014, the Daily Mail apologised to the actor after it ran a story about his wife’s mother claiming she did not approve of their wedding. He branded the story “false” and “irresponsible”.
