Google has pulled the plug on its support for a prepaid debit card from 30 June as it seeks to streamline the process of sending and receiving money via the Google Wallet app.

Owners of un-activated Wallet cards will be able to activate and use the card as normal until the cut-off date but from that point onwards will be out of luck.

Wallet Card was introduced back in 2013 as a convenient way to pay for goods and withdraw money from cash machines.

The app itself will remain in use for peer to peer payments but cash can no longer be added via a debit card or bank account.

Instead Google is focussing its energies on Android Pay for mobile in-store and in-app purchases which has rendered such functionality on Google Wallet largely redundant.
