Campbell's Soup cans

Campbell's Soup cans

It happens every time I go to my local Gristede’s to pick up some fresh jumbo eggs. I get that feeling of total awe.

You see, to get to the eggs I have to pass through the soup aisle and each time I do, well, it’s just overwhelming. Ka-Boom! The Campbell’s Soup section turns right before my very eyes into a living art installation.

I guess there was a time long, long ago when I looked at a can and thought of chicken and noodles. But it’s so long ago I can’t remember. Now I look and see Brillo, Marmite, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Chanel, Mobil, Amoco, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, US Dollar, Mickey Mouse, Mao, Mohammed Ali, Michael Jackson, Jackie O... I see the unimaginable genius of Warhol.

He is beyond doubt the ultimate dude I’d collab’ with.

Ahead of his time? He was so ahead of his time he’s not even born yet. More ahead of his time than that visionary helicopter designer, Leonardo da Vinci.

In our industry we need people like him, the mad ones, the cracked ones, the rebels and renegades, the ones who think differently, to show us the way. Andy was all of that and more, and I wish I could hang out with him and do some work together, have a laugh. How cool would that be?
