This year, the Advertising Club of New York is celebrating its 120th anniversary. To kick off the celebration, The Drum and the Advertising Club will be sharing 120 top marketing moments that have happened since the organization’s inception in 1896 – everything from the first radio commercial in 1922 to Apple’s iconic 1984 ad.
Each day, a new marketing moment will be revealed as the Ad Club counts down the days until its anniversary. Readers are encouraged to submit their favorite marketing moments from the past 120 years for a chance to be featured on The Drum.
The winning moment will be announced at the Advertising Club’s Annual Meeting of Members on 19 July at Current at Chelsea Piers, where the club will also be presenting the President Awards for outstanding volunteerism and will welcome in a new Board of Directors.
Of the milestone, president and CEO of the Ad Club Gina Grillo said: “It is an honor for me to represent an organization with such a rich history. The Club has worked side by side with the industry for decades honoring the craft, creating a pipeline of diverse talent, sharing expertise and providing access to people and content. Today, we continue to provide a platform for the community so we evolve as the industry evolves.”
Throughout its history, the Advertising Club of New York has spearheaded many “firsts” for the industry. In 1906 – when the club was still called the Advertising Men’s League – it launched a series of talks at New York University that marked the first time advertising was formally taught at an educational institution.
In 1911, it formed the Advertising Vigilance Committee, which was the first ‘truth in advertising’ practice and eventually evolved into today’s Better Business Bureau, a nonprofit in the US and Canada that focuses on advancing marketplace trust.
A little over 50 years ago, the Ad Club launched the International ANDY Awards, which rewards creativity in the industry. The 52nd Andy Awards will take place on 12 April at The Refectory at the Highline Hotel in New York City. 2016 jury chair is Colleen DeCourcy, partner and global co-executive creative director at Wieden + Kennedy. Jury members include FCB’s global chief creative officer, Susan Credle and founder of Barton F. Graf 9000 Gerry Graf.
With more than 4,500 members from all disciplines across the industry, the Advertising Club of New York “represents the vision and mission of a vibrant global advertising community across crafts.” Its chairman is global chief digital officer of MEC Global, Carl Fremont and its senior vice president is Mari Kim Novak, SVP-global advertising solutions at the Rubicon Project.
