Sky’s chief marketing and digital officer Stephen van Rooyen, has been promoted to chief executive of its UK and Ireland operations.

His ten year career at Sky has seen him fill numerous senior roles, starting out as director of product management and product marketing, managing director of sales, marketing and brand to his most recent role as chief marketing and digital officer, which he has filled since August 2014.

Van Rooyen joined Sky from Virgin Media in 2006, before which he held roles at Nokia, News UK and Accenture.

He will now assume overall leadership of Sky's consumer and business divisions for the UK and ROI. It is not yet known what is to become of the chief marketer role in the future.

There have been a number of changes to people's responsibilities at Sky recently, as it moves more formally to a matrix management structure to reflect the fact that the company operates across multiple markets, the Drum understands.

Sky announced earlier this week that Andrew Griffith, group chief financial officer and managing director of commercial businesses, will take on further responsibilities within the company as he becomes group chief operating officer.
