An overview of marketing strategies between 2016 and 2020 confirms that email use in business continues to grow at a healthy pace and retains a solid foundation as a marketing strategy. With nearly 2.6bn using email today, it is estimated that by the end of 2020, one third of the worldwide population will be using email reaching the total of 2.9bn by the end of 2020. Currently 1.7bn are mobile email users, according to research published by California-based Radicati Group.

Additionally, over the next four years, it was predicted that the average number of email accounts per user ratio is estimated to grow from an average of 1.7 accounts per user to 1.9 accounts per user. Further, despite the increased use of IM, social networking and other forms of communication, email continues to show the most steady growth as all IM, social networks and other services require users to have an email address to access their services. For this reason, the number of worldwide email accounts is expected to continue to grow at a slightly faster pace than the number of worldwide email users, particularly email accounts, since many consumers tend to have multiple email accounts, the report notes.

As email use continues to grow and develop in its uses in the business world, with an estimate 3 per cent growth over the next four years, the report's executive summary estimated that 2.6bn emails were sent in 2016, with the potential for it to reach over 3.0bn by the end of 2020.

The report projects that 128.8bn of these will be business emails sent or received. It is expected that on average, 126 business emails per person are sent each day, and 88 emails are received each day for business individuals. It is estimated that 76 of those 88 emails are legitimate emails and 12 are spam. It is also estimate that on average an individual in business sends 34 emails per day.

This week, tributes were paid to the man attributed with the invention of email, Ray Tomlinson, who died at at the age of 74.
