Amazon Video job listing betrays its virtual reality ambitions

Amazon is looking to bolster its video offering with a yet-to-be-unveiled virtual reality (VR) service, according to a new job listing form the company.

UploadVR has noticed that the e-tailer is looking to hire a senior software development manager for a VR experience linked to Amazon Video.

The listing states: “Entertainment is evolving rapidly. The future will not be limited to passive 2D experiences.

“The Virtual Reality team will explore and create the platform and interface for immersive storytelling. This will include an ingestion and playback platform for Virtual Reality experiences.”

The listing unveils that the company is bracing itself for an entertainment industry in which VR forms a cornerstone. It sees the company follow in the footsteps of Netflix and Hulu, bracing itself for a VR future.

Amazon last month released a free game engine called Lumberyard. Based on the popular CryEngine, time will tell whether the company encourages developers to build VR experiences in the system.
