Sky Atlantic is marking the return of Game of Thrones to its subscription television service with a giant ‘White Walker’ artwork carved from a snow field.

Created by snow artist Simon Beck to coincide with the 25 April debut of season five the piece saw Beck trudge 32.5km through deep Alpine snow to dig out the features for his piece using nothing but a compass to guide him.

Fans of the show will recognise the resulting piece as the sigil of the show’s House of Stark which played a key role in the finale of the last season following the unexpected demise of the appropriately named hero Jon Snow.

In all the piece took 13 solid hours of walking to create and stretches to the size of 2.5 football pitches.
