The Daily Mail has become embroiled in a diplomatic spat with the government of Sweden after the Nordic nation’s London embassy complained that the country was being singled out for negative coverage in the European migration crisis.

Sweden has become concerned that its global image could be tarnished by the incessant coverage due to the global reach of Mail Online with refugee articles regularly drawing thousands of reader comments, many expressing right wing views.

A government memo picked up by Swedish news agency TT, said to have been signed off by ambassador Nicola Clase, read: “The tabloid Daily Mail has launched a campaign against Swedish migration policy.

"Sweden is being used as a deterrent and an argument against allowing more refugees into the UK. The Daily Mail characterises Sweden as naive and an example of the negative consequences of a liberal migration policy."

The Swedish embassy has declined to comment on the veracity of the report.
