Executives from Facebook and Asos have joined the board of the Government Digital Service (GDS).

The GDS was set up off the back of lastminute.com co-founder Martha Lane Fox’s Digital by Default report to look into how digital could improve government services. To date, its biggest project has been Gov.uk, which brought some 300 public sector websites under one easy-to-use portal.

The new board of advisors to the GDS was announced yesterday at the government’s Sprint 16 conference. Among those to join Baroness Lane-Fox on the board are: ASOS chair Brian McBride; Richard Allan, director of policy, Europe at Facebook; Saul Klein, CEO and founder of LoveFilm; Sir Nigel Shadbolt, chairman and founder of The Open Data Institute; and Monique Shivanandan, group CIO at Aviva.

However, the department has had a difficult year on the back of the executive director of digital at the Cabinet Office, Mike Braken’s resignation amid reports of wider budget cutting.

Despite this, it revealed the roll out of a new service ‘Pay and Notify’ which will enable any government department to access one central system to email, text or write to members of the public and make and accept payments.
