Adidas boots out footballer Adam Johnson in wake of child grooming admission
Sportswear giant Adidas has sought to distance itself from disgraced Sunderland player Adam Johnson following the footballer’s admission of kissing and grooming a 15-year old girl.
Johnson had signed a £10,000 per season boot deal with Adidas but this was torn up within 24 hours of the guilty plea at Bradford Crown Court.
In a statement the sportswear brand said: “Adidas can confirm that it has terminated its contract with footballer Adam Johnson with immediate effect. This follows his guilty pleas entered earlier this week.”
This isn’t the end of the matter for Johnson however with the player expected to face a two week trial from today as a jury deliberates over whether two further charges of sexual activity with the girl are true.
In the meantime Johnson has been dropped by the Sunderland manager and will miss a crunch match against Manchester United on Saturday.
