Google is now so confident of its computing prowess that it is to stage a man vs machine Go faceoff by pitching its own artificial intelligence algorithm against world champion Lee Sedoi.

The head to head follows a series of recent wins for AlphaGo, the search giants latest Go playing algorithm, which saw off French Go champion Fan Hui – equated to the seminal moment in which IBM’s Deep Blue saw off former chess champion Gary Kasparov.

Despite the computational heft of his opponent Sedoi remains confident of his ability to win however as the game is seen as far more complicated than Chess due to the exponentially larger number of moves available which has favoured human players – until now.

The five-set challenge will take place in Seoul South Korea from 9-15 March with a $1m prize pot available to the winner.
