Happy Friends Day: Facebook marks 12th birthday by 'stitching together special moments' for users

Facebook turns 12 today, and it is marking the occasion with a with Friends Day which "invites the world to celebrate and reflect on the importance of connecting."

The initiative gives Facebookers to opportunity create a Friends Day video by stitching together "special moments" with their friends via a short film which can be edited and shared.

The company revealed that there are only 3.57 degrees of separation between each user worldwide, a slight drop from 2011's figure of 3.74 and something the firm says is a "significant reflection of how closely connected the world has become."

In addition to the user generated content, Facebook has launched a campaign to tell the story of GirlCrew, a group formed on the site which now has over 22,000 members and allows women to find friends and organise events in their city.

A limited edition 'Best Friends' sticker pack has also been unveiled on Facebeook Messenger to celebrate the occasion.

"When people connect, powerful things happen and lives are changed. We see this on Facebook every day, whether it’s an exchange with an old friend that brings a smile to your face or a new connection that changes your life path, or even the world," Facebook said in a blog post.

The company revealed last week that it is to update it's like trademark like button with emoji feature Reactions.
