Video games giant Nintendo has released fresh details of its first ever smartphone game and a revamped online service as it seeks to branch out from its own proprietary formats to the fast growing mobile and digital gaming spheres.

Miitomo takes the form of a life-sim title where players take control of a Mii avatar to interact with real world people and objects and communicate with friends. It will also include compatibility with Mii Photo, enabling avatars to be placed in AR-style photos and shared on social media.

In tandem with this the Japanese firm will also launch My Nintendo, a revamped rewards programme for registered users which will offer a personalised service and discounts for gamers as well as the ability to purchase games online.

Miimoto will be rolled out as a free app from 17 February with the possibility of in-app purchases following thereafter.

My Nintendo meanwhile is expected to go live by the mid-March in Japan before expanding to other global markets later that month.
