Cosmopolitan's editor-in-chief, Joanna Coles, has joined Snapchat's board of directors.

The company has confirmed that she arrived at the messaging app in early December, sitting alongside co-founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, as well as Sony chief executive Michael Lynton and benchmark partner Mitchell Lasky.

Originally editor-in-chief of Marie Claire Coles took up her current position at Hearst-owned Cosmopolitan in 2012.

The women's magazine has been closely involved with Snapchat for the past 12 months, having signed up to the platform's Discover section when it launched in January 2015.

According to WDD reports, when asked about the its company policy around editors serving on boards of media partners and whether it posed a conflict of interest Heart president David Carey said: “Here at Hearst, potential board roles are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

"I’m very pleased that Joanna is on the board of directors of such an important and ascendant technology company," he added.

Earlier this month the publisher's UK arm announced a string of senior digital appointments, poaching talent from Yahoo and the Telegraph in a bid to "deliver what customers want online and on mobile."
