People on the move: Hires and departures at AOL, the Guardian, Just Eat, Adidas and more

This week has seen another wave of appointments and departures at brands, media owners and agencies. The Drum has rounded up the key hires below.

AOL

AOL has announced that Stuart Flint, UK commercial director, will replace Hamish Nicklin as managing director following his surprise departure to take a new role at the Guardian, The Drum has learned.

Flint joined the company as part of Microsoft Advertising amidst its merger with the tech company as it integrated its sales teams following the agreement of its partnership in the UK.

Nicklin, who joined from Google in March, has moved to take a role he has 'long coveted' at the Guardian as chief revenue officer, responsible for advertising revenues, jobs and it's branded content division.

Guardian

Hamish Nicklin has been poached from global media technology company AOL, where he was managing director of the UK business, and joins Guardian News & Media as chief revenue officer.

It is the first time the Guardian has appointed a chief revenue officer, which incorporates the media company's advertising revenues with its Jobs and Guardian Labs businesses.

Just Eat

Just Eat has poached Notonthehighstreet.com's marketing director, Ben Carter, to head up its UK marketing arm.

Joining at the begining of next month he will oversee the takeaway delivery site's consumer, trade, digital and social media channels.

Carter has served as marketing director at Notonthehighstreet.com for two years, prior to which he held posts at Betfair and Setana Sports. Before making the leap to work client-side, he was a journalist and editor at New Media Age and Marketing Magazine.

Adidas

Adidas has announced that the boss of Henkel, the German FMCG business, Kasper Rorsted will replace Herbert Hainer as the sportswear company’s new chief executive.

Rorsted, who is currently the chief executive of the consumer and industrial company Henkel, will join the board of Adidas in August before taking up the position as chief executive in October.

He will replace current chief executive, Herbert Hainer, who will step down at the end of September after more than 14 years in charge.

Hungryhouse

Online takeaway platform Hungryhouse has promoted its marketing director Alice Mrongovius to the top role at the company as it former chief executive Scott Fletcher moves to a senior management role within parent group Delivery Hero.

Mrongovius joined Delivery Hero in 2011 as its seventh employee, it now has over 2,500 staff globally, before becoming moving up the ranks to become marketing director for hungryhouse in 2014 where she has helped define the brand in the competitive UK market.

BBC

The BBC has upped its cost-cutting measures by axing channel controller roles for BBC One and BBC Two in a bid to consolidate control and restructure to recognise the growing importance of the digital platform to the broadcaster.

Former BBC One controller Charlotte Moore has been promoted to the newly created role of TV and iPlayer controller in chase of "a simplified and more co-ordinated strategy across BBC Television's channel portfolio”.

Kim Shillinglaw, chief of BBC Two and BBC Four, will leave the broadcaster as her role is dissolved.

ITV

ITV's director of television Peter Fincham is stepping down after eight years in his role to be replaced by ITV Studios boss Kevin Lygo as of 1 February.

It has been emphasised the decision is Fincham’s own, although the move comes amid speculation that ITV chief executive Adam Crozier is rethinking strategies among the commissioning team followingThe Voice bidding war with the BBC.

Meanwhile, ITV chairman Archie Norman has stated his intention to depart the commercial broadcaster as soon as a successor can be found according to reports.

Norman is understood to have informed colleagues of his decision during a recent boardroom meeting, bringing to an end his six year tenure at the broadcaster overseeing hit shows such as Downton Abbey and Broadchurch.

Asda

Dom Burch, Asda’s senior director of marketing innovation and new revenue, is to leave the retailer in the coming weeks to take on a new challenge.

He began his 10-year tenure with the high street giant as a PR manager, before rising in early 2014 to spearhead a team of 40 as Asda explored how to better monetise new media channels.

Ogilvy & Mather

Ogilvy & Mather, one of the world’s largest marketing communications companies, has announced the appointment of John Seifert as worldwide chief executive officer. Seifert succeeds Miles Young, who will take on the position of Warden at his alma mater New College at Oxford University.

Most recently, Seifert served as chairman and chief executive of Ogilvy & Mather North America, a position he will retain in his new role. He will partner with Tham Khai Meng, Ogilvy & Mather’s chief creative officer, who will also become co-chairman of the Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide board.

Publicis Worldwide

Publicis Worldwide has named Carla Serrano, formerly the agencies chief strategy officer, as chief executive of New York with immediate effect.

The promotion is intended to shift the creative agency’s focus from operations towards clients, currently including the likes of PayPal, Telefonica and Coca-Cola, by placing them at the core of its activities.

Serrano will report directly to North America chief executive Andrew Bruce, who has held the post along with his current role for the past two years.

Pumpkin PR

Pumpkin PR has named Tracey O’Connor, ITV’s former head of press, as its first managing director to focus on developing the business, grow its account portfolio and lead its PR team.

O’Connor will report directly to newly appointed chief executive Sarah Owen and has over 20 years’ experience in PR, media and broadcasting through her time at ITV, including heading up the PR strategy for ITV’s repositioning of its VOD service.

IBT Media

IBT Media, the global news organisation that owns Newsweek and the International Business Times, has appointed Greg Witham as its first chief operation officer for the UK and EMEA to spur the business’s global growth.

In his newly created role, Witham has been tasked with driving growth geographically, across multiple platforms and disciplines. As well as overseeing the overall strategy and operations of the business, he will be responsible for spearheading commercial growth and developing new revenue streams. Witham’s role will be effective from 7 March.

BSSP

Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners (BSSP) has announced the appointment of Keith Cartwright as executive creative director as part of its acquisition of boutique shop Union Made Creative.

BSSP, the 22-year independent based in Sausalito, California that counts MINI, HTC, DraftKings, Greyhound, El Pollo Loco and others on its agency roster, will pair Cartwright with agency veteran Tom Coates, who will be elevated to executive creative director from his previous creative director role.

Look

Fashion weekly Look has announced the appointment of Gilly Ferguson to the role of editor.

​Ferguson joins from her current role as style content director at sister Time Inc. UK brand Now.

IPM

The IPM has made three new appointments to its board.

Lucy Brackett, marketing services manager at Epson UK; Robert White, co-founder and strategic planning director at Zeal; and Sarah Burns, director and co-founder at Spark and Fuse, will all take up positions on the IPM Board from the brand owner, agency, and service provider sectors, respectively, with immediate effect.
