Presidential hopeful Donald Trump has initiated the second stage of his TV attack ads with an assault on GOP rival, senator Ted Cruz.

The Republican front runner, having released his first ad in January which is now absent from YouTube, is now on the offensive, hoping to weaken Cruz’s support with accusations that he "is a total hypocrite and, until recently, a Canadian citizen who may not even have a legal right to run for president".

Front and centre is footage of Cruz, babbling his way through his views on an immigration bill, he said: "Eh-of course I wanted the bill to pass, what, my amendment to pass, what my amendment did is take citizenship off the table but it doesn’t mean, what it doesn't mean that I supported other aspects of the bill.”

Immigration has remained one of the main aspects of the GOP battle after Trump rose to the top of many polls on the back of the issue.

The ad will look to bolster support for the New Yorker in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.
