Auto giant Ford is reportedly in talks with Google over the prospect of it mass producing the internet giant’s much touted driverless car, which is still at the prototype stage.

A joint effort between the two isn’t beyond the bounds of possibility with former Ford chief Alan Mulally sitting on Google’s board of directors.

Such a move also makes financial and logistical sense with Ford gaining access to Google’s bleeding edge tech for use in its own vehicles and Google gaining access to Ford’s massive manufacturing clout.

Questioned about any potential tie-up a Ford spokesperson said the firm “… worked with a lot of tech companies all over the world… we keep these discussions private for obvious competitive reasons and we do not comment on speculation.”

Prototypes are currently being tested in San Francisco with a commercial launch pencilled in for 2020.
