Nick Hopkins is returning to the Guardian as head of investigations after BBC2's Newsnight lured him away in 2014 as its investigations correspondent.

In his new role, Hopkins will lead the Guardian’s investigations team to create agenda-setting investigative stories.

Hopkins worked at the Guardian for 16 years, holding high-level roles of investigations editor, national news editor, deputy foreign editor and defence and security editor.

In May 2014 Hopkins moved to BBC2’s Newsnight as its investigations correspondent, teaming up with Ian Katz, Newsnight editor and former Guardian deputy editor. On Hopkins appointment to Newsnight in 2014, Katz expressed his excitement that the current affairs programme was "back in the business of breaking original agenda-setting stories".

Katharine Viner, editor-in-chief, Guardian News & Media said: “Nick is a hugely talented and respected journalist with a formidable track record. I am delighted to welcome him back to the Guardian and look forward to seeing him lead our excellent investigations team as we continue to break stories and set the global news agenda."
