Donald Trump has dismissed the 500,000-strong petition to ban him from the UK by saying his social media support could get him double the number of signatures in minutes.

“You know what 500,000 is? I have 10m. Much more. Between Facebook and Twitter I have much more than 10m,” the outspoken Republican presidential hopeful told the Sunday Times.

“I could get 500,000 with one click,” he added, clicking his fingers according to the broadsheet. “I could literally get a million in a matter of hours or minutes. So it doesn’t mean anything.”

More than half a million Brits signed the petition to ban the billionaire from the UK, making it the most popular ever on the government's website as it outstripped the previous record of 446,482.

It came in response to Trump's controversial comments on the campaign trail, including his call for Muslims to be banned from enterting the US.
