US retailer Bloomingdale’s, German supermarket chain Edeka and Apple have all caused a stir on social medlia this season with their holiday ads.

Bloomingdale’s inadvertently found itself as the most talked about brand online between Nov. 4 and Dec. 4 according to data from digital marketing technology firm Amobee Brand Intelligence because of an ad in its holiday catalog that featured a man staring at a woman with the caption “Spike your best friend’s eggnog when they’re not looking,” which many said alluded to rape.

Amobee measured which brands were most associated with the term ‘holiday ad’ across social, web, and mobile. Between Nov. and Dec. 3, there were 13,000 tweets around Bloomingdale’s, 20 per cent of them negative.

Edeka’s controversial video about a grandpa who fakes his own death to get his family to visit him, which now has more than 41 million views on YouTube, generated 56 per cent as much holiday ad buzz as Bloomingdale’s between Nov. 4 and Dec. 4.

Apple’s ad featuring Stevie Wonder and Andra Day as they sing ‘Someday At Christmas’ received 20 per cent as much online conversation as Bloomingdale’s. The video currently has nearly three million views on YouTube.
