Barcelona's Camp Nou sponsorship deal moves forward with Van Wagner partnership

FC Barcelona’s efforts to secure a lucrative new sponsorship deal for the Camp Nou have taken a step forward after the club appointed Van Wagner Sports and Entertainment to help line up prospective brands.

The Spanish La Liga champions are reportedly keen to tie-up a deal during December so that the board can present the new sponsorship agreement at its 2016 general assembly.

Van Wagner have a record of working with a number of sports teams on their stadium sponsorship including English Premier League club Arsenal who named their stadium the Emirates Stadium and NFL teams New York Jets and New York Giants who play in the MetLife Stadium.

The new sponsor will see its name branded on one of football’s most iconic stadiums and can expect to pay somewhere in the region of around €20 million per season for the right to do so. It will further benefit from the worldwide popularity of the clubs stars such as Lionel Messi and Neymr, both of whom have been shortlisted for Fifa’s Ballon d'Or award.

In February this year reports emerged that the club was considering incorporating Qatar Airways into the stadium name as part of a future sponsorship deal. Such a deal has since appeared less likely after the club came under pressure from fans to drop its Qatar shirt sponsorship in light of accusations of the company’s mistreatment of its female employees.

Income from the deal is expected to help Barcelona fund its Espai Barça stadium remodelling project which was unveiled in 2014 and is expected to cost around €20 million. The upgrades will bring the stadium capacity up to 105,000 and are scheduled for completion in 2021.
