Disney has proven that the return of Star Wars is a force to be reckoned with US pre-sales breaking box office records.

The movie, which has four weeks before its release, accumulated over $50m in ticket sales, putting it on a path to become the highest earning movie ever.

The Force Awakens, which opens in the US 17 December, has a task on its hand trumping the $209m opening weekend set by Jurassic World earlier this year. Its efforts will be hindered however as no movie ever released in the Christmas period has ever breached a $100m opening weekend in the US.

Variety reports that MovieTickets.com, one of the US’ top online ticket vendors, claims that Star Wars has breached ticket sales records – especially so far away from the movie’s actual release.

Disney paid $4bn for the franchise in 2012 in a transaction where it snapped up original Star Wars director George Lucas’ studio LucasFilm.
