Donald Trump’s media pull was trumped last night as the Republican presidential hopeful saw Ted Cruz accumulate more online mentions with the former reality TV star instead coming under heavy criticism from his rival candidates.

Social media monitoring company Brandwatch reported that the Republican presidential debate on FOX Business accumulated more than 543K online mentions.

While Trump’s rating powers were able to boost SNL’s ratings higher than they have been in the last four years, his popularity was overtaken by Ted Cruz who accumulated 91K mentions to Trump’s 86k.

Ran Paul was the third most mentioned candidate with 74K mentions while Ben Carson received 70K mentions. Jeb Bush was the least talked about of all the Republicans with 45K mentions.

Brandwatch’s report also looked at the positive and negative proportion of the mentions online which saw Rand Paul came out on top with 65.4 per cent of the conversations surrounding him being largely positive. Ted Cruz followed closely with 62 per cent of his mentions being positive and Marco Rubio was third with 61 per cent.

The single moment of the whole debate which registered the most mentions belongs to Ted Cruz with 2,800 mentions. His slip up in failing to name the five major federal agencies that he would cut saw him mention the department of commerce twice. Ben Carson’s decision to address the media of being vetted and over his West Point scholarship resulted in the second number of mentions with 2,700.

The only aspect which Trump came out on top on was with the highest number of mentions from women which is perhaps unsurprising given his lack of popularity among women.
