'Peep Show is a gift from the social media gods' - How Channel 4 got Jezza and Mark back on your newsfeed
Channel 4 has gone all out to inform the UK of the impending return of Peep Show on Wednesday evening - as a result the chances are you’ve seen some of the broadcaster's content on social media.
To celebrate the return of outcasts Mark and Jeremy for a ninth (and possibly final) season, Channel 4 has reached out to tens of thousands of people with its own in-house generated content distributed across its social platforms.
A diverse range of posts, on as broad a spectrum as Super Hans’ opinion on drugs to a satirical business-like LinkedIn post from none other than Alan Johnson, has reignited the nation's love of the comedy duo.
Harry Dromey, Channel 4’s group marketing manager for entertainment, described Peep Show as “a gift from the social media gods," hailing the show's engagement on Facebook and Twitter.
Dromey said: “Even after an extended break, love for the characters and the script remains undiminished. People are lapping up the content we are putting out on Facebook and Twitter and enthusiastically adding their own."
The studio is using its social channels to drive nostalgia for the show, which Dromey claims won’t just have viewers tuning in for the new season but also “watching the box sets [of the previous eight series] on All 4”.
Of course, the social media push, by That Lot, remains just a single pillar of a larger campaign to spread the word of Peep Show’s return.
Dromey concluded: “Across the Channel 4 network we are giving Peep Show a big push and our PR machine is getting it talked about in the media. It’s been a joy to work on. It’s a pleasure marketing LOLz as opposed to insurance or incontinence pads.”
