Online marketplace Etsy is piloting a same day delivery service entitled Etsy ASAP in New York.

With the pilot, Etsy is looking to capitalise on the rising tide of New Yorkers hunting for unique handcrafted products on sale on the platform – especially in the run up to Christmas.

At a flat delivery fee of $20, Etsy’s fast-track distribution is considerably more expensive than what’s on offer from the likes of Amazon Prime (which is charging $7.99 for one hour delivery on certain goods in the region).

The bulk of the deliveries are to be handled by logistics firm Postmates with an initial 5,000 products available in the scheme.

Aimee Schiwal from participating vendor Hook and Matter said: “We’re super excited about Etsy ASAP- its immediacy and ‘buy local’ spirit create a more intimate connection with our customers that didn’t exist before, plus it’s cool to be able to provide the perfect handmade product in a pinch.”

The service is available on mobile, desktop and tablet with shoppers able to filter down valid one day delivery products.
