US broadcaster NBC has debuted its smart TV app on Microsoft’s Xbox One and Apple TV ahead of further iterations for Amazon’s Fire TV and Google’s Chromecast.

This means owners of compatible devices will be able to stream full episodes of hit NBC shows such as Grimm, Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as well as being able to access exclusive content such as short clips and the current season of The Blacklist.

Rob Hayes, executive vice president, NBC Digital Entertainment, said: “It’s exciting for us to launch our vast library of NBC programming on Xbox One and Apple TV."

Some content will only be made available as a pay TV service although NBC insists that "the overwhelming majority" of material will be free to view.

Previously the NBC app was only available on iOS and Android and is one of a number of innovations planned by the network that includes the launch of an online comedy subscription service called SeeSo in December.
