Luxury car brand Mercedes has sought cinematic inspiration from Doc Brown and Marty McFly for its latest television ads, by showcasing its futuristic ‘autonomous’ vehicle which can drive around happily without any direct driver input.
Each short but sweet instalment of the trio includes a reference to the now iconic film series including the famous ‘hoverboard’, dog walking drones and scorched tire tracks.
The series coincides with a wave of nostalgia for the mid-eighties interpretation of a hi-tech future with events in the film scripted to have occurred on 21 October, 2015 – so-called Back to the Future Day.
Each spot concludes with the line ‘Thanks for inspiring our engineers, Doc. Happy Back to the Future Day.”
