Google hands out cash reward to student who took over its domain (briefly)
A student who purchased the Google.com domain name following an administrative error at the technology firm has been handed a cash reward for his chutzpah.
American student Sanmay Ved snapped up the rights to Google.com on 29 September and was the proud owner of the popular search engine for a full minute, before administrators cottoned onto what had happened and cancelled the deal.
Greatful for having spotted the error Google paid out a cash reward which Ved has reportedly donated to charity.
Eagle-eyed Ved spotted the domain for sale on Google’s own website purchase service for the princely sum of $12, a bargain he snapped up immediately, the transaction was instantly confirmed by email and Ved began receiving administrative emails intended for Google’s own tech teams.
Following this however Google subsequently retracted their offer, pointing out that someone had already registered the domain.
