Facebook has announced a raft of new changes to its video offering which will bring it more in line with rival YouTube’s product.

As Facebook’s video output bloats, the social network is looking to aid in the discovery of such content with the addition of a dedicated hub.

The company, which tripled the volume of user uploaded video in 2014, has its eyes set on becoming a popular video ecosystem to take a substantial chunk of Google’s YouTube ad revenue. It claims its algorithms will curate suitable videos from friends and families in addition to trending topics on the site.

It also wants to increase the length of users’ video sessions with the feature by providing suitable content likely to engage users.

It announced the upcoming video overhaul on the company blog: “We’ll be testing a dedicated place on Facebook for people to go when they exclusively want to watch video—whether that’s videos they’ve saved for later, or videos from friends, pages they follow, and other video publishers on Facebook.

“This new videos section helps people discover, watch and share videos on Facebook that are relevant to them.”

The segment will be available by hitting the videos tag on the iPhone app or the ‘Favourites’ section flanking the newsfeed on desktop. The feature is currently being piloted by a small number of users on iOS.
