It was revealed alongside three new smartphones, the latest version of its Surface tablet and an all new fitness band as Microsoft seeks to keep pace with the fast moving sector.

Particular attention has focussed on the laptop which marks Microsoft’s first attempt to tackle the dominance of Apple’s MacBook head on, claiming that it promises to blur the boundaries between tablets and laptops by incorporating a demountable touchscreen.

Also on show were three new smartphones; including the flagship Lumia 950 and its bigger brother, the Lumia 950 XL. A budget version, the Lumia 550, will also be made available.

Analysts broadly welcomed the array of new gadgets though cautioned that Microsoft faces a tough challenge in clawing back market share from Android and iOS.
