Chris Evans has responded to speculation over who his co-presenters could be on Top Gear by hinting that he might go it alone.

Evans suggested that the trio format used by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May might not be adopted when he takes the up the reins to the show next year.

Speaking to the Press Association, the Radio 2 presenter said was “going to do things differently” and was quick to brush aside the idea that he would have to co-hosts.

He continued “the second you wander off into the 'Well, I'm the main host, and this is my mate over here and my mate over here, if there's three of you and you go and make a film together, suddenly you're doing what they did. Why would you do that?”

He said Clarkson and co were “brilliant at it” and vowed “I'm not going to do that”. The 49 year-old added “So, one thing is for sure, there's not going to be me and one guy there, and one guy there, that's not going to happen."

The comments from Evans seem in contrast with his sentiments earlier this year when he called on Top Gear fans to send in short audition clips, with the aim of finding presenters to join him.

However the move still appears to be on the cards with Evans confirming that they had "screen tested some people from the videos at the Top Gear studio so some people who sent those videos in have reached the final stages”.

The TFI Friday presenter signed a three-year contract for the new series of Top Gear which will run across two series of eight episodes each and is scheduled to begin in May next year.
