A trademark application filled by Jeremy Clarkson’s lawyers has led the media to speculate that the name of Amazon Prime’s new motoring show with the former Top Gear presenters could be called “Gear Knobs”.

Clarkson’s lawyers, Olswang, filed the trademark in mid-July, two weeks before Amazon announced the £160m deal to run a motoring show with the trio which would be made available exclusively on its prime Instant Video service.

It may well, however, simply be a promotional stunt on the part of Clarkson and co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May. Only last month Amazon Instant video boss Roy Price said the team were still struggling to find a name for the new show however the trademark application would fit with the laddish personas of the group.

A second trademark was also filed through Clarkson’s lawyers, who used a shell company called Newincco 1361, however it would be more likely to stir controversy with the title "Gear Nobs”.

The new show will be produced by the trio’s long time executive producer Andy Wilman who joined the trio to create their own production company called W. Chump & Sons Limited after Clarkson parted ways with the BBC in March after punching a producer during filming.
