Global youth media company Vice UK has appointed the Guardian’s live features editor Rebecca Nicholson as editor-in-chief on the same day as recruiting her colleague Jenny Stevens, commissioning editor for culture, as managing editor.

As well as bringing in fresh blood the management shake-up also places women in a position of dominance at the media outlet complementing further changes which saw Elektra Kotsoni elevated to European editorial director.

Nicholson's UK appointment follows the promotion of Ellis Jones earlier in the year, as Vice magazine’s first female editor-in-chief in New York. Nicholson replaces Kev Kharas in the UK role, with Jamie Clifton promoted internally as deputy editor of Vice UK.

This follows the launch of Broadly, a channel targeting females with a diet of politics, culture, sex and fashion, by Vice Media.

Nicholson remarked: “Vice UK has changed a lot over the last few years and I can’t wait to work with its outstanding team of young journalists on shaping the next incarnation. With more original reporting, a louder voice in British media and a focus on bringing even more diversity to its broad range of writers, we’ll ensure that the sharpest, biggest, and best stories are being told as only Vice can tell them.”

Assuming her new role in November, Nicholson will report directly to Vice’s global head of content, Alex Miller.
