#SMBuzzChat talks visual networks and Periscope debut

September 4, 2015 | 9 min read

After last weeks successful #SMBuzzChat, the Social Buzz Awards decided to strike again whilst the iron was hot with #SMBuzzChat 2.

Known as a leader in industry circles for awarding the finest social media work, The Social Buzz Awards have not partnered with the strong social media tastemakers and influencers until tonight. The arrival of #SMBuzzChat signals a new breed of opinions on The Drum from marketing experts whose tips can help provide important training to those starting out.

For this edition or episode of #SMBuzzChat, we invited Laurence Hebberd of Social Media London and Link Humans to ask the questions. Instead of just holding the chat directly on Twitter, we Periscoped the chat, which concluded with a balloon finale.

Here’s what the community had to say on last night's questions.

The next #SMBuzzChat will take place at 7pm on 8 September.

Question 1: Which is better for video - Vine or Instagram and why?

Laurence had the following to say:

"I feel both Instagram and Vine are good for different reasons. Instagram is perfect for brands who want to show off their highest quality content, whereas Vine is best for creators - the artists who make content for themselves and brands."

Here are some opinions from the community:

Question 2: Which features would you like to see added to a visual network/Instagram?

Laurence had the following to say:

"I think the number one feature that all us marketers would want to see added to Instagram is the ability for switching between multiple accounts. However, this could also decrease the amount of time spent on the app - therefore less time viewing ads and making Facebook less money. Therefore, I don’t think it’s going to come anytime soon. Alongside it’d be good to see some integration between Instagram and Twitter, but as Twitter and Facebook are evil enemies, that’s never coming back."

Here are some opinions from the community:

Question 3: What is your most popular upload/photo on Instagram?

Laurence had the following to say:

"My most popular upload on Instagram is a photo of Foo Fighters playing a 'secret show' in Brighton. I post a high amount of musical content on my Instagram (as I go to gigs all the time) so I feel it fits exactly with what my 'audience' expect and like seeing.

Here are some opinions from the community:

Question 4: Should brands change their tone of voice on different channels just to suit their purpose? Laurence had the following to say: "My favourite tool for creating visual content is my mobile phone camera. I think that it is extremely powerful for taking and editing photos (as you can add filters, crop or resize) and saves a lot of time fiddling around with Photoshop. Aside from that, my favourite tool is Canva - it’s a free, easier version of Photoshop and produces fantastic results!" Here are some opinions from the community:

Well, the only opinion on this topic was from Laurence himself, however over on Periscope the debate got heated. Commenters from 10 Yetis and beyond were discussing how it’s not the software, it’s actually the content that matters.
