The Facebook juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down after racking up a billion hits in a single day, founder Mark Zuckerberg has boasted.

In a blog post Zuckerberg revealed that the bumper figure had been breached on Monday when ‘1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family.

‘This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world.’

Facebook has amassed an army of 1.5bn users who log in on a monthly basis but this is the first time that two thirds of them have happened to log in within a single 24 hour period.

Founded in 2004 Facebook has enjoyed stratospheric growth, signing up its billionth member in October 2012 – although it has now reached saturation levels in the developed markets of the US and Europe, prompting it to look further afield to Africa, Asia and Latin America for growth.
