Information commissioner launches Carphone Warehouse investigation after data leak
The UK information commissioner is to mount an investigation into the Carphone Warehouse after the retailer admitted losing the personal details of up to 2.4m customers in a ‘sophisticated’ cyber-attack on Saturday.
The breach, first identified on Wednesday, included the encrypted credit card details of 90,000 customers with other losses thought to include names, addresses, dates of birth and bank details.
It is believed the breach first occurred a fortnight ago but was only picked up by the business on Wednesday, whereupon the action was stopped ‘straight away’.
A spokesman for the Information Commissioner's Office said: "We have been made aware of an incident at Carphone Warehouse and are making enquiries."
Dixons Carphone has apologised for the breach and has taken down affected websites OneStopPhoneShop.com, e2save.com and Mobiles.co.uk as a precautionary measure.
