Aspartame-free Diet Pepsi is slated to hit shelves in the US on Monday as the soda giant tries to battle sluggish sales.

The company has reformulated one of its signature drinks in an effort to appeal to consumers who are increasingly concerned about the negative health effects of aspartame.

Both Diet Pepsi and Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi will now be sweetened with a blend of sucralose and acesulfame potassium. The sweetener replacements mark the biggest change to the soft drink in 30 years.

The soda brand is leveraging its National Football League sponsorship to help launch the new drink with both in-store and digital advertising, according to Ad Age.

The new cans are similar to older version except for one small yet notable change: ‘now aspartame free’ now sits above the Pepsi logo in small print.

According to Beverage Digest, Diet Pepsi’s sales volume fell 5.2 per cent last year.
