The number of subscribers to Apple’s newly launched music streaming service has hit the 11m mark just five weeks after its launch, as audiophiles flock to the service to take advantage of a free three month trial period.

Since 30 June Apple Music has been going head-to-head with the likes of Spotify, which now boasts 75m active users – 20m of whom pay for a premium service, in the competitive online music arena and is fast approaching the reach of Deezer – which has 16m active users, 6m of whom subscribe.

Apple’s early success has already put it beyond the reach of established rival services such as Rhapsody/Napster with 3m subscribers and Tidal with just 770,000 subscribers.

Similar platforms such as Google Play Music and Rdio have opted not to divulge their own stats.

Commenting on the numbers Apple executive Eddy Cue told USA Today that he was ‘thrilled’ with the momentum achieved but questions remain as to how many of these users will continue their subscriptions at the end of the free trial period.

The 11m figure is also small in relation to the 800m registered iTunes accounts in operation, not to mention hundreds of millions of iOS devices in use worldwide.
