Tech publication Re/code has apologised for tweeting a Holocaust joke after German auto firms including Audi, BMW and Daimler purchased Nokia’s mapping business Here.

The tweet, which provided a link to a story by Ina Fried, featured the text “Yeah, now my BMW has a star on it and keeps saying "TURN LEFT NOW!" when I drive past Birkenau.”

Noticed by The Register, the promptly deleted tweet referenced the Birkenau concentration camp in which an estimated 1.1m people were killed.

Re/code tweeted an apology after a substantial social media backlash against the misguided humour.

Zara last year came under fire for selling a pair of kids pyjamas which shared a substantial likeness with a Nazi death camp uniform.
