Canada’s health minister has stepped up her efforts to ban illegal marijuana advertising with the creation of a dedicated task force.

Rona Ambrose said the task force would monitor illegal marijuana advertising and “ensure that those who engage in such illegal activities are stopped.”

The move follows on from a rise in illegal online and storefront marijuana dispensaries which the Conservative government want to ensure remain illegal.

The announcement comes ahead of the federal government elections and is a response to Liberal Party of Canada candidate Justin Trudeau’s plans to legalise marijuana. Ambrose has been very vocal in her opposition to legalising marijuana, saying that it “has not been proven safe nor effective as a medicine.” She has also publicly described Trudeau’s stance on marijuana as “irresponsible.”

Ambrose said that “dispensaries, whether they are online or a store-front, are illegal and they should not be allowed to advertise these illegal services.”

Marijuana advocate Jodie Emery said the government’s opposition to advertising marijuana was based on “an ideological...rather than a scientifically health-based approach.”

She said the strict ban on advertising did a disservice to Canadians who wish to inform themselves.
