Surprise One Direction announcement resulted in 1.6 million tweets in a matter of hours

The band's new single Drag Me Down caused a storm on Twitter with fans desperate for new material.

The surprise release of One Direction’s new single this morning saw twitter erupt with an incredible 23 thousand tweets every minute relating the pop band.

Band member Liam Payne announced the surprise release of the new song called Drag Me Down at 06:12GMT this morning which resulted in 1.6 million tweets in the preceding hours as fans around the world spread the news.

The hysteria peaked at 06:38am with figures showing 23K tweets per minute. The interactive visualisation shows how the announcement unfolded on Twitter over the course of the morning, including the peaks in conversation when the band were posting on the social media platform.

Other members of the boyband also took to Twitter following the announcement including Niall Horan who tweeted: "Finally we get to say this! Have waited a long time but our new single Drag Me Down is out!!"

The band are currently on the American leg of their On The Road Again tour, and are due to return to the UK in September for their arena tour before the release of their fifth album in November.
