ITV has posted a healthy 25 per cent surge in profits to £391m over the first half of 2015 despite a corresponding four per cent drop in the number of people watching its programmes over the same period.

Driven by the performance of hit shows such as X-Factor and Downton Abbey, the broadcaster increased total revenues by 11 per cent year on year to £1.36bn, driven by a strong performance at ITV Studios where revenues rose 23 per cent to £496m.

Ad revenues were also healthy, rising six per cent for the nine months to the end of September following a five per cent rise in the first six months.

Chief executive Adam Crozier sought to downplay the ratings decline, insisting that this had not impacted upon commercial performance, but promised increased investment in its flagship soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale which have seen viewers dip by four and two per cent respectively.

ITV is confident it can maintain revenue momentum in the second half with the X-Factor set to return to screens in the autumn with new judges Nick Grimshaw and Rita Ora and the Rugby World Cup due to kick-off.
