Social media users in Wales are the most foul mouthed, swearing more than twice as much as England.

Working with linguist Jack Grieve, The Independent collected more than 5,000 geolocated tweets in a week where people had taken to social media to show anger over the handling of the Welfare Bill.

People in Wales tweeted the most swears per million population at 127 with the Scots following close behind with 123. Northern Ireland swore the least in tweets with 24 swear words per million population.

The study follows research from the University College London last year which revealed a peak in swearing on Twitter around transfer deadline day. At the time researcher, Hannah Fry, told the BBC the social network had a "reputation for being the home of angry, aggressive messages".

In terms of curse words f**k was the most commonly used in 1888 tweets, followed by s**t with 1557 mentions.
