YouTube’s assault on the traditional TV advertising market is continuing, with the chief executive of the Google-owned video service Susan Wojcicki claiming that it doubled its mobile revenue in the last year, as she unveiled a new version of its mobile app.

Wojcicki made the revelations speaking at the VidCon conference this week, claiming the company’ top priority was “mobile, mobile, mobile!”, adding that YouTube just had its “best year ever”, before unveiling the Android version of its latest mobile app.

During her address, she also cited Nielsen data, claiming that traditional TV viewing among 18-34 year-olds was down 16 per cent compared to last year, and that YouTube’s audience reach among 18-49 year-olds was currently bigger than any US cable network.

The updated YouTube app lets users edit video directly from their device, and also includes three new tabs: Home; Subscriptions; Account. The key updated functions are improved content recommendation features, plus users can watch full-screen vertical videos for the first time on the app.

The blog post announcing the updates also claimed that over half of all YouTube viewing sessions are now performed on mobile devices, with the VoD service also revealing yesterday that it has now extended its 360 degree TrueView video ad units to mobile devices, after first introducing them in March.
