Burger King has honoured its promise to foot the bill of a ‘Whopper wedding’ for Joel Burger and Ashley King.

The fast food chain tracked down the pair after they announced their engagement in April by posing in front of a restaurant’s sign.

“When we heard about the happy Burger-King couple, we felt an overwhelming urge to celebrate their upcoming marriage,” said Burger King spokesman Eric Hirschhorn.

Known as Burger-King since they became friends aged 10, the couple from Jacksonville, Illinois, tied the knot on Friday (17 July) in a traditional ceremony, although the bride and groom did pose with the restaurant’s famous paper crowns.

After the wedding the groom said: “I’m a Burger. Her last name will be Burger. But it will forever be Burger King.”

He added that Burger King had been “awesome” and that “a new package from Burger King arrived every day.”

The best men gave a nod to the fast food chain wearing Burger King T-shirts under their suits and each guest received a $10 Burger King gift card.
