Facebook-owned photo sharing platform Instagram has outlawed use of the hashtag #curvy, originally popularised by those seeking to promote a more rounded view of the female body after it came to be hijacked by porn firms.

Media reports suggest the term came foul of the sites sensors after it was used to host x-rated images, in violation of the websites terms and conditions of service.

Whilst the term #curvy has been blocked critics have been quick to point out that similar terms such as skinny, fat and fat slag remain available.

Amongst them was Madeline Jones, editor-in-chief of Plus Model Magazine who wrote: "Instagram has decided to suppress the hashtag #curvy, as porn companies were using it. While many questionable hashtags are still searchable, we wonder about the logic of this bold move."

Instagram has earned a reputation for the zealous enforcement of strict content rules; after it banned images of breast feeding, stretch marks and menstruation.
